Birth Control Methods ? Birth Control Pill

The most reliable method of birth control is abstinence, that is not engaging in sex. This form of birth control has the added benefit of preventing the transmission of a sexually transmitted disease. Table 17.3 lists other means of birth control used in the U.S., and rates their effectiveness. For example, the natural family planning, one of the least effective methods in the table, we expect that within a year, 70 out of 100, or 70% of sexually active women will not fall pregnant, while 30 women get pregnant. Figure 17.15 features some of the most effective and commonly used birth control. Oral contraception often involves taking a combination of estrogen and progesterone on a daily basis. Estrogen and progesterone in birth control pills stop the production of pituitary FSH and LH so that no follicle begins to develop in the ovary, since ovulation does not occur, pregnancy can not take place. Because of possible side effects, women taking the contraceptive pill should see a doctor regularly. An IUD is a small piece of molded plastic that is inserted into the uterus by a doctor. IUDs are believed to alter the environment of the uterus and fallopian tubes so that fertilization will probably not happen, but if fertilization is to occur, implantation can take place. On type shown in Figure 17.15b copper wire wound around the plastic. The diaphragm is a soft latex cap with a flexible rim that fits snugly behind the pubic bone and fits over the cervix.
