Let me be blunt: If Republicans nominate Rick Santorum, they will lose.
The prospect of four more years of Barack Obama holds some appeal for many Americans, but probably not for most Republicans. It may give doubters among them some comfort, however, to know that Obama and Santorum share the same prayer: that Santorum be the Republican nominee.
It gives me no pleasure to rap Santorum, a man I know and respect even if I disagree with him on some issues. Not that he minds. He?s a scrapper who loves a fight ? and he forgives. Bottom line: Santorum is a good man. He?s just a good man in the wrong century.
This doesn?t necessarily mean he?s wrong about everything, but he?s so far out of step with the majority of Americans that he can?t hope to win the votes of moderates and independents so crucial to victory in November. The Republican Party?s insistence on conservative purity, meanwhile, will result in the cold comfort of defeat with honor and, in the longer term, potential extinction.
Increasingly, the party is growing grayer and whiter. Nine out of 10 Republicans are non-Hispanic white and more than half are highly religious, according to Gallup. This isn?t news, but when this demographic is suddenly associated with renewed debate about whether women should have access to contraception ? never mind abortion ? suddenly they begin to look like the Republican Brotherhood.
Add to that perception the abhorrent, pre-abortion ultrasound legislation proposed in Virginia, and you can kiss the pope?s ring and voters? retreating backsides.
The proposed law, temporarily tabled, called for women seeking an abortion to be forced to submit to a vaginal ultrasound. Aldous Huxley?s ?The Devils of Loudon? comes to mind, but he was writing about exorcisms in a convent of 17th-century France. When did Republicans, who supposedly believe in less government intervention, begin thinking that invading a person?s body against her will was remotely acceptable?
Saner minds have prevailed, at least for now, but the fact that the bill was ever conceived and taken seriously by at least some number of legislators gives freedom-loving voters every reason to run the other way.
Informed consent is, in my view, a reasonable goal. Surely removal of a human fetus deserves the same level of awareness we would insist upon in removing, say, a gall bladder. If some women change their minds after viewing the contents of their womb, then they obviously needed more information than they had going in. Still, any procedure should be voluntary, and inserting a probe into a woman against her will is rape by any other name.
Obviously, this is no place for the state.
The Virginia bill and the broader (bogus) message often repeated on left-leaning talk shows that Republicans are campaigning against birth control have created a perfect storm for defeat. The math is clear: Sixty-seven percent of women are either Democrats (41 percent) or independents (26 percent); more women than men vote; 55 percent of women ages 18-22 voted in the 2008 presidential election.
Republicans are caught in a nearly impossible situation, none more than the more temperate-minded Mitt Romney. It is important to remember, however, why contraception came up in the first place. Republicans were forced to man their battlements by the Obama administration?s new health care rule mandating that Catholic organizations pay for contraception in violation of conscience. From there, things spiraled out of the realm of religious liberty, where this debate belongs, and into the fray of moral differences.
Santorum?s original surge was based not on social issues but on his authenticity and his ability to identify with middle-class struggles. He was the un-Romney. But now this appealing profile has been occluded by social positions that make him an outlier to mainstream Americans.
Republicans may sleep better if they nominate The Most Conservative Person In The World, but they won?t be seeing the executive branch anytime soon. It?s too bad this election season got lost in the weeds of religious conviction. It wouldn?t have happened if the Obama administration had simply taken one of several other routes available for providing birth control to women who want it. Instead, Obama aimed right at the heart of the Republican Party and, one can only assume, got exactly what he wanted: a culture war in which Rick Santorum would be the natural point man and, in the broader public?s perception, the voice of the GOP.

This event brings together some of the area?s most talented young artists in a unique program including newly choreographed works by International Ballet Company Artistic Director, Miguel Campaneria and New York City Ballet member, Lauren Lovette. These works will feature live music provided by the Triangle Youth Philharmonic.
Miguel Campaneria was born in Cuba and was trained at the National Ballet School of Cuba under the guidance of Alicia Alonso, Fernando Alonso, and Azari Plisetski. He joined the National Ballet of Cuba and was promoted to soloist at the age of 17. He won the bronze medal in the junior category at the prestigious International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. Upon leaving Cuba, Mr. Campaneria joined the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre as a principal dancer and subsequently joined the Ballets de San Juan as a principal dancer. In the summer of 1983, Mr. Campaneria accompanied fellow Ballets de San Juan principal, Maria Teresa del Real, to the International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. Participating in the Competition as a non-competitor, Mr. Campaneria was awarded the special prize as Best Partner, and his experience proved beneficial in Miss del Real being awarded the bronze medal in the senior category at the Competition. Their performance in the Don Quixote Pas de Deux was lauded as the single most impressive event at the Competition. Both Mr. Campaneria and Miss del Real were invited to the White House by President Reagan to receive his personal congratulations on their achievements in Varna. In 1986 Mr. Campaneria joined the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre as a principal dancer and in 1987 created the role of the Exhibition Dancer in Andre Prokovsky?s The Great Gatsby. In 1990, Mr. Campaneria left the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre to pursue a career as a freelance guest artist, master teacher and choreographer. In 1991 Mr. Campaneria joined Ballet Municipal de San Juan as a permanent guest artist and artistic advisor.?? From 2002-04 Mr. Campaneria was?artistic director of the R.M.T. Academie de Danse in Haiti.? In 2005 Mr. Campaneria was appointed artistic director of Balleteatro Nacional de Puerto Rico, and has choreographed for the company the full- length productions of Carmen, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Delirium and Paso a Dos. In October of 2007 Mr Campaneria was nominated by the White House to serve on the National Council on the Arts, the advisory body of the National Endowment for the Arts. He was confirmed by the Senate and will serve on the Council until 2012. Mr. Campaneria served as Chair of the Dance Department for the University of Hartford until July 2010.? He is currently the Artistic Director of the International Ballet Academy in Cary, North Carolina.
Lauren Lovette was born in Thousand Oaks, California and began studying ballet at the age of 11 when she studied with Rossana Machi Gahagan. She attended summer courses at the School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet, during the summers of 2004 and 2005 and enrolled at SAB as a full time student in 2006. In October 2009, Ms. Lovette became an apprentice with NYCB and joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet in September 2010. Since joining NYCB, Ms. Lovette has performed featured roles in George Balanchine?s The Nutcracker (Dolls) and Christopher Wheeldon?s Polyphonia.? Ms. Lovette also originated roles in Christopher Wheeldon?s Estancia.? "Fremont can enforce employment provisions of a controversial immigration ordinance approved by its residents in 2010, but a federal judge said on Monday that the city cannot prevent those without legal immigration status from living there. A 37-page summary judgment from U.S. District Court Judge Laurie Smith Camp is the latest development in an immigration dispute that began with proposed employment and housing sanctions and a city council defeat of those proposed sanctions in 2008," the Columbus Telegram says.

New site for adults with limited literacy skills, with audio versions of each page
Bethesda, Maryland--(ENEWSPF)--February 21, 2012. ?A new, easy-to-read website on drug abuse designed for adults with a low reading literacy level (eighth grade or below) was launched today by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health. The site, which provides plain language information on neuroscience, drug abuse prevention and treatment, is also a resource for adult literacy educators. It has a simple design with a large default text size, motion graphic videos and other features that make it easy to read and use.
"Drug abuse and addiction affects people of all reading levels, yet there are no websites with drug abuse information created specifically for adults with limited literacy," said NIDA Director Dr. Nora D. Volkow. "We hope this new site will inform a large segment of our population who may not have otherwise received potentially life-saving information."
The website's emphasis on plain language supports the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service?s commitment to clear government communication that the public can understand and use. The site goes beyond plain language by using a website design and features that are easy to use, including animated videos that explain the science of addiction and how drugs affect the brain.
The website will use the ReadSpeaker text-to-speech tool that provides audio versions of each page without the need to download any software. The embedded highlighting tool enables website visitors to see synchronized highlighting of the text that is currently being read.
Before creating the site, NIDA interviewed adults who were seeking to improve their literacy skills to learn their challenges and preferences in using websites. NIDA also worked with groups that provide services to adult learners through nonprofit organizations, libraries, and in healthcare clinics. In addition, NIDA conducted website usability testing at nonprofit organizations that serve adults seeking to improve their reading and/or earn a GED.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is proposing to cut the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 28 percent and wants an even lower effective rate for manufacturers, a senior administration official says, as the White House lays down an election-year marker in the debate over tax policy.
In turn, corporations would have to give up dozens of loopholes and subsidies that they now enjoy. Corporations with overseas operations would also face a minimum tax on their foreign earnings.
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Wednesday was to detail aspects of Obama's proposed overhaul of the corporate tax system, a plan the president outlined in general terms in his State of the Union speech last month.
Chances of accomplishing such change in the tax system are slim in a year dominated mostly with presidential and congressional elections. But for Obama, the proposal is part of a larger tax plan that is central to his re-election strategy.
The corporate tax plan dovetails with Obama's call for raising taxes on millionaires and maintaining current rates on individuals making $200,000 or less.
The 35 percent nominal corporate tax rate is the highest in the world after Japan. But deductions, credits and exemptions allow many corporations to pay taxes at a much lower rate.
Under the framework proposed by the administration, the rate cuts, closed loopholes and the minimum tax on overseas earning would result in no increase to the deficit.
That means that many businesses that slip through loopholes or enjoy subsidies and pay an effective tax rate that is substantially less than the 35 percent corporate tax could end up paying more under Obama's plan. Others, however, would pay less while some would simply benefit from a more simplified system.
The official said the Obama plan aims to help U.S. businesses, especially manufacturers who face strong international competition. Obama's plan would lower the effective rate for manufacturers to 25 percent while emphasizing development of clean energy systems. The administration official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe what the administration will do.
The New York Times first reported details of the plan in its online edition early Wednesday.
Many members of both parties have said they favor overhauling the nation's individual and corporate tax systems, which they complain have rates that are too high and are riddled with too many deductions.
The corporate tax debate has made its way into the presidential contest. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has called for a 25 percent rate, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., would cut the corporate tax rate to 12.5 percent, and former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., would exempt domestic manufacturers from the corporate tax and halve the top rate for other businesses.
While Obama has been promoting various aspects of his economic agenda in personal appearances and speeches, the decision to leave the corporate tax plan to the Treasury Department to unveil signaled its lower priority.
What's more, the administration's framework leaves much for Congress to decide ? a deliberate move by the administration to encourage negotiations but which also doesn't subject the plan to detailed scrutiny.
Obama's plan is not as ambitious as a House Republican proposal that would lower the corporate rate to 25 percent.
Still, Obama has said corporate tax rates are too high and has proposed eliminating tax breaks for American companies that move jobs and profits overseas. He also has proposed giving tax breaks to U.S. manufacturers, to firms that return jobs to this country and to companies that relocate to some communities that have lost big employers.
Geithner told a House committee last week that the administration wants to create more incentives for corporations to invest in the United States.
"We want to bring down the rate, and we think we can, to a level that's closer to the average of that of our major competitors," Geithner told the House Ways and Means Committee.
White House economic adviser Gene Sperling has advocated a minimum tax on global profits. Currently many corporations do not invest overseas profits in the United States to avoid the 35 percent tax rate.

Hi all, Have a problem where the end bay of my garage floods. I have a drain along the front though it is not big enough to handle heavy rain. Looking at concreting a hump on the outside to prevent the water, only needs to be a couple inches high. See photo , I have drilled in some reo bars and tied some across to help with strength. Any experience out there to help me . Thanks |

I would have to say from all appearances, that drain width is either clogged with stone, or too small, if it is not taking on the water from an extreme downpour. A concrete hump is not going to do anything, since the rain when it falls, will still go into the garage. Hi thanks for comments. Agree in hindsight the drain is too close... You can see from this photo that it is a steep driveway and if I'd have ramped away from the shed it would've made it even steeper (but maybe a good option compared to water). Mixed with the end bay being 65mm lower than than the rest of the shed (this was originally an open bay and the shed company said that would weatherproof the enclosed bays. Cheers |

Most friends and family that come over for entertaining come late in the afternoon for dinner. SO and I know just how to organise this pretty well now. Today we had friends over for a late lunch. It was easier for them as they have a nearly one year old son.
This threw up a few new issues for us in the category ?how to organise? which we then made more difficult with the ?SO away on business? sentiment. Luckily for us I had planned to have a Friday me-day, now turned into a ?let?s get everything sorted day?. No complaints there as I still had plenty of me time, just had to really have a to-do list.
So I got up at my normal time 06.15, did yoga had breakfast. By 08.00 the supermarket opened and I walked in 3 minutes later and did the majority of the shopping. The rest of the shops were not open yet, so I went home. Then I had my sewing time until 12.30 in which time I managed to sew up two yoga pants. 12.30 was lunchtime and then off to the city for second rounds ? a little me-shopping for lace and buttons, only to find that the lady of the knitting shop recognises me even outside the store (Ok I know her sister as well so that may help 
), then off to the stamp shop to buy FIL?s birthday present, followed by the nice cheeseshop for entertaining stuff and finally my green grocers for the fresh food and veg section.
I decided that a cup of tea was a requirement at this stage, then I set off to bake muffins (chocolate and pistachio and lemon blueberry) As soon as that was ready I set out on cutting veg for the soup (pumpkin, paprika, carrot and tomato), but not before I kissed my SO happily when he arrived home. After the soup was finished dinner was prepared. The evening was spent on the couch snuggling up to SO and with some knitting. I slept well 
This morning was more shopping, SO preparing the tortilla and mayonaise. I made the wraps with smoked chicken, salmon and ham/cheese. While SO cleared the house. We were finished about 30 minutes to spare. They arrived spot on 14.00 Phew!
The afternoon was relaxed, fun and really nice. The food and people were super. Their little boy is mostly curious but does not take centre stage. He was more than happy just playing on our Fatboy. What we noticed the most was how relaxed these parents are. Just one normal sized bag with stuff, happily only keeping sort of half an eye and ear out but no major fuzzing. Loved their attitude and their just as relaxed little boy. Mind you these people are due to get married in June and that too seems to be rather relaxed.
Around 17.00 they took off again and now we have the whole evening to ourselves. So yes I had to organise myself a little differently yesterday, but I did enjoy my day a lot. I got to wander around town, get to do some shopping and really the weather was so nice, that in fact it was a treat to be outside. I am having a great weekend and I have one more day to go! The simple things in life sometimes can really make you happy.
