The following interview is with Mark de Scande, who runs BlogLines.co.za with his wife Charissa. BlogLines is a freemium-style site (free blogs with paid upgrade options).

Mark became a lifetime WPMU DEV member not long ago, and so if you hang out in the WPMU DEV Community, he may be familiar to you.

He is based in South Africa.

BACKGROUND:

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself before you got into running your site? What is your background in?

I was in the car audio trade years back. I was fitting sounds system, and so then I started selling car audio online. All was good until I got hit by a scam and got taken for R 30K (South Africa Rand).

Then I started to play with WordPress and started selling paint ball equipment online. Then I opened a shop in Port Elizabeth but closed? it down about three years later. At that time I started my BlogLines site.

I am always on there. That is how I make money ? keeping tabs on things.

How do you control splogs? / How much time spent? / Are they hard to spot?

Splogs? I love them as they make me money. I use ProSites to limit the number of posts. Then they have to upgrade, and yes they do.

I was wasting my time killing them, but now I know to work with them to make me money.

How do you deal with people posting unwanted content?

I only remove content if I get an email asking me, but if there is porn, they get banned for life.

Ever had issues??

Yes, some fat ass?attorneys wanted to take me to court for their customer?s content. I just removed it, and the problem was solved.

How did you first attract people to the site when it was new?

Goolge Webmaster tools (it showed me where to look for more traffic), and I used some JUNK link software. I also used Google Adwords. Don?t waste your money, just keep working on your site. :)

I don?t. They just come as we have so much stuff listed on Google. It is easy. Just post something on?BlogLines.co.za, and go google it. You will see it popping up on Google page 1.? :)

And guess what ? our Page Rank is only 3 with Google, but I guess?content is KING.

What do you find works best for attracting new members?

Just post on your Facebook. It always works? :)

We also do websites for customers for $339, so about $50 per day. It is still a lot of money in South Africa. :)

Through Facebook and friends of friends (99% of the site we do? are customers of customers).

Outsourced Community Management: Agency to B2B Social Media ...

Outsourcing community management is a cost-effective way for companies to run successful social media programs even if they don?t have the internal social media resources to support such activities on their own.

Sometimes a company?s marketing department is in the midst of developing internal resources and engages with a third-party community manager to provide strategic and practical guidance to help them get their footing before taking over social media activities later on.

Other times, a company is too small or new to have its own marketing department, but realizes the benefits of social media as a relatively inexpensive marketing program. It hires an experienced, external community manager to run its program, saving the cost-heavy training and trial-and-error activities required to learn the platforms on its own.

At Francis Moran and Associates, I am responsible for developing social media strategies and also, if clients require, carrying out those strategies on their behalf. I?ve done this for large enterprises based right here in Ottawa as well as tiny startups located as far away as the U.K. Regardless of how much space there is between agency and client, the processes required to carry out successful outsourced social media activities are the same.

Lay down expectations at the outset

The first step to successful agency-client social media communications is laying down expectations in the social media proposal and strategy at the outset of the program. The strategy, as well as a follow-up conversation, should answer:

Who will take on what roles?
What activities will be carried out and by whom?
How often will social media activities be carried out?
At what time each day will activities be carried out?

In addition, will the client be responsible for writing its own LinkedIn answers and blog comments, will the agency write responses on the client?s behalf, or will this be a shared responsibility? If the client is responsible, who will the participants be? Is this activity consistent across all social platforms, or will participation be divided and/or shared? How often are social media activities required throughout the week? Who has time to take on these activities consistently? If the agency is responsible for uncovering opportunities for the client to engage, what times can the client expect those opportunities in its inbox? How quickly will it need to turn them around for posting? Will the agency post or will the client post after the agency has reviewed?

The answers to these questions just scratch the surface of the kinds of details that must be ironed out at the outset of an outsourced social media program for communications to be smooth and effective.

Establish a single point of contact

Depending on the size of the organization, you may need to establish a few points of contact for each major department, such as sales, marketing and the c-suite. However, communications are most efficient when there is one person who acts as a direct line to the company. This person has committed to the agency to respond promptly to social media notifications, direct posts of interest onto the appropriate parties in the company to respond, and relay that content back to the agency to proof read and post (if those are indeed the expectations laid out in the proposal and strategy).

Decide means of communication

As I hope you are well aware, there is a plethora of new tools available today that help agencies and clients communicate. We have email, collaboration platforms, Skype and social media platforms, to name just a few. I?ve used every one of these tools to coordinate social media activities with clients. As there are so many messages flying back and forth between agency and client, there needs to be a system in place to ensure messages don?t get lost in the kerfuffle. Decide on one platform that works best for everyone and hold to it. If you have to get in touch with multiple people at an organization, email can sometimes be the best option as most people are familiar with it. However, if you have a sole point of contact, I recommend using social media platforms themselves for communications. For example, I direct message tweets to a client representative for her to review and then post on the account. Everything is done in one place, making it one seamless process.

Gibb's son played 'I finally died' line for dad

It's a touching line in one of the Bee Gees' saddest songs, and for singer Robin Gibb's son, Robin-John Gibb, it was a line he wanted to share with his father just minutes after the musician died on May 20.

Robin-John, 29, known as RJ,?told the British newspaper Sunday Express the band's 1968 tune "I Started a Joke" played a role in his farewell to his father.

Said Gibb, "One of my favorite Bee Gee songs, 'I Started A Joke,' has the line: ?I finally died, which started the whole world living? and I played it on my phone, put it on Dad?s chest and we sat together. I?d tried to hold it all in until then but that?s when I bawled like a baby."

Gibb also said that he heard the same song in a restaurant the night after his father died, and that it was played?at the exact time Robin Gibb had passed away. "We all fell silent and listened to it," he told the newspaper.?"I just broke down and cried.?

Robin Gibb's family used music in an?attempt to help the Bee Gees founder come out of his coma back in April, singing and playing familiar songs at his hospital bedside.?The singer did awaken from the coma, but died about a month later.

His son says his father's cancer had actually gone into remission and was too small to detect, but that kidney failure eventually killed the singer. He was 62. His brothers Andy and Maurice preceded him in death.

RJ Gibb said a private funeral will be held in June, and will include Bee Gees tracks, Gibb's favorite hymns and possibly songs by the late Roy Orbison, a friend of Robin Gibb. A public memorial service is scheduled to be held at London's St Paul's Cathedral in September.

"I haven?t just lost a father, I?ve also lost my best friend," RJ Gibb said.

One of the most anticipated events on our schedule was the day trip to Normandie, to visit the American cemetery at Caen. While walking the grounds at Caen and Omaha Beach, these normally chatty Southern women were awestruck and speechless.
