Google Drive client comes to Chrome OS and iOS, available today

Google Drive comes to Chrome OS and iOS

Windows, Mac and Android users are no longer alone in their access to Google Drive's online repository. Now iOS and Chrome OS users can install a client and pull down their data and docs (though, the promised Linux client was nowhere to be seen at IO). The iOS app has all the features that make Drive drive great on Android, including OCR and picture recognition. As part of the demo, Clay Bavor, Director of Product Management for Google Apps, showed off the apps ability to decipher and index text from receipts he had taken a picture of. Perhaps more impressive though, was his ability to simply type "pyramids" and have his vacation snapshots pop up. There was no metadata attached to the images identifying them as the pyramids in Egypt, Google was able to recognize the landmarks by analyzing the photos.

Obviously, Drive and seamless integration with it is key to Chrome OS's success. Now the browser-based OS finally has a native Drive client allowing you to quickly sync and access your data on the lightweight Linux machines. The ability to sync files with Chrome OS is great, but more importantly, an update to the web service has now made offline editing available -- perhaps the most requested feature. Now with offline access ironed out and all the major desktop and mobile OSes under it's belt Drive may actually be ready to challenge peripheral competitors like Dropbox.

Land deals in India to drop 25%: C&W

??|?? June 29, 2012 ?? 10:32am ??|Contributed by MANOJa

Hit by a demand slump in the residential sector, India is likely to witness around 25% decline in land deals to around Rs 15,000 crore, realty consultant Cushman & Wakefield today said.

The firm also said most of the land purchases would be done by regional smaller players instead of big developers.

?The market sentiment is very negative. This year we may see land deals worth Rs 15,000 crore happening across various locations in the country,? Cushman & Wakefield (C&W) Executive Managing Director (South Asia) Sanjay Dutt told PTI on the sidelines of CII realty summit here.
According to C&W, India had seen land deals worth Rs 20,000 crore in 2011, he added.

Dutt said out of the expected transactions, Rs 7000-8000 crore have already taken place.

When asked about the locations, he said: ?NCR and Mumbai will alone account for 60-70%of the total deals, along with some top tier I cities. Some tier II cities will also witness some deals.?

Most of the land purchases will be done by regional smaller players instead of big developers, he added.

He further said organised players like Godrej, Mahindras and L&T will continue to purchase land as and when required.

Talking about the demand, Dutt said sales of housing units have fallen by about 30%across the country in the last one year.

?Some places in Mumbai and NCR prices have gone up tremendously in the last two years. This has led to slowdown in demand,? Dutt said.

L.A. metal recyclers charged in mishandling of toxic waste

Los Angeles city prosecutors Wednesday took the unusual step of filing criminal charges against the owners of three metal recycling businesses, accusing them of illegally handling hazardous waste and allowing toxic chemicals to be released into storm water.

"These facilities pose a significant threat to human health and the environment," said Patty Bilgin, who heads the Los Angeles city attorney's environmental justice unit. "These are toxic chemicals. We don't know where they are going."

The conditions inspectors found in some of the facilities were "inherently dangerous," Bilgin said. Among other things, the criminal complaint said there were puddles of oil on the ground and stacks of refrigerators and radiators ? which had not been properly drained of hazardous chemicals ? mixed in with scrap metal.

Prosecutors charged Jong Uk Byun, who owns Central Metal on South Alameda Street, with eight misdemeanor counts, including one related to runoff of water contaminated with copper, lead and zinc.

Geovedy and Waihner Cifuentes, owner and manager of CDL Scrap Metal on Mateo Street downtown, were charged with nine counts, including mishandling hazardous waste, illegally discharging polluted water and operating without a permit.

Don Monroe, the owner of C&M Metals on 24th Street, faces 13 similar counts.

If convicted, each business owner could face hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and up to a year in jail, prosecutors said.

Waihner Cifuentes said he was taken by surprise. "I did not know. I have not received anything," he said.

He added that after inspectors visited his property earlier this year, "I did everything they told me.... We have everything in order here."

A person answering the phone at Central Metal said "nobody is aware of this" and had no further comment.

Monroe of C&M Metals said the charges "come as a shock" because he thought he had done his best to comply with what regulators asked.

The city attorney's office filed the charges after numerous agencies, including the Los Angeles County Fire Department's hazardous materials division and the regional water board, conducted inspections in February.

Recycling scrap metal ? much of it shipped to factories in Asia ? is a booming business in Central and South Los Angeles, and many environmental groups complain that some outfits violate environmental laws with impunity.

Councilwoman Jan Perry, a mayoral candidate who represents the area where two of the businesses operate, said she hopes the charges send a "loud and clear" message "to any company that chooses to profit before community health that we are watching and will not take these actions lightly."

Liz Crosson, executive director of Santa Monica Baykeeper, an environmental group that has sued several metal recycling operations for violating the federal Clean Water Act, also welcomed the action.

"It's important that polluters be held accountable," she said. "Contributing pollutants like toxic metals to our waterways is a criminal action. "

Her group earlier this month filed a federal lawsuit against C&M Metals accusing it of allowing water contaminated with toxic metal to drain into Ballona Creek.

Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile review

DNP Samsung Galaxy S III for TMobile review

If three's a crowd, the Samsung Galaxy S III party in the US is about to get pretty stuffy. Having already reviewed AT&T and Sprint's variants -- not to mention the original I9300 before them -- we're now ready to put a third iteration through its paces, this time from the country's fourth-largest carrier, T-Mobile.

Of course, the phone itself needs no grand introduction, as it's fast become the new darling of the smartphone world. And rightfully so, in many respects: it's the first high-end device to launch on all four major mobile operators in the US (a feat in and of itself), and it's done so with minimal carrier branding, hardware changes or bloatware levies. It is, in essence, an unadulterated handset. The reason this piece of news is so wondrous is that it opens up your ability to choose your phone service based on the network, not on the actual phone each individual carrier offers.

Sadly, the big tradeoff here is the loss of an Exynos quad-core processor in exchange for a Snapdragon S4 dual-core chipset and additional RAM. Join us as we take a deeper look at the T-Mobile Galaxy S III. Is it the best phone on the network? Is it worth shelling out $280 (with a two-year contract) for the 16GB model or $330 for 32GB? How well does it perform? This and more answers await you in our full review below.

Chevron Faces Asset Seizure In Brazil Over $18 Billion Ecuador Judgment, Says Amazon Defense Coalition

To: ENERGY, LEGAL AFFAIRS AND NATIONAL EDITORS

BRASILIA, Brazil, June 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Villagers from Ecuador's rainforest who won a landmark court judgment against Chevron for causing massive environmental and health damage filed suit Wednesday to seize the oil giant's assets in Brazil to generate funds to remove cancer-causing toxins and oil sludge from their ancestral homelands.

The legal action, made necessary by Chevron's refusal to comply with an $18 billion court judgment in Ecuador that was affirmed on appeal, is the second filing to force the company to pay for the clean-up of a disaster that decimated indigenous groups and caused an outbreak of cancer and other oil-related diseases that have killed or threaten to kill thousands of men, women, and children, according to various court findings in Ecuador. See here.

The villagers took their first step toward enforcing the judgment in Canada, where they filed a suit May 30th intended ultimately to garnish various revenue streams and assets held by Chevron through two subsidiaries in that country. In Brazil, they are asking the country's highest civil court to recognize the Ecuadorian judgment so seizure actions can take place.

Filed in the Superior Tribunal of Justice in Brazil's capital of Brasilia, the suit targets Chevron operations that produce a daily average of 33,000 barrels of crude oil and 13 million cubic feet of natural gas. Brazil, which has the sixth largest economy in the world, is considered a major strategic play for Chevron's long-term growth.

See the official complaint in Portuguese here and the unofficial English translation here.

Noted Brazilian litigator Sergio Bermudes represents the Ecuador rainforest communities. Bermudes founded his own law firm in 1969 and has successfully represented clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies such as Citigroup to political prisoners jailed during his country's military dictatorship in the 1970s. See here.

"I am honored to have been chosen by the indigenous peoples of Ecuador to help correct a gross violation of fundamental human rights visited upon them by Chevron," said Bermudes. "After reviewing the lengthy trial record, I have no doubt the Ecuador judgment will be enforced in Brazil."

Bermudes added: "After an eight-year trial, Chevron's extreme recklessness and the grave damage it caused to the environment in Ecuador will not be reviewed by Brazilian courts. The Superior Tribunal of Justice will only analyze whether the Ecuador decision meets the requirements of Brazilian law for enforcement of foreign judgments."

Brazil and Ecuador are signatories to a treaty that facilitates reciprocal enforcement of judgments among countries in Latin America, potentially streamlining the enforcement process and limiting the ability of a defendant to re-litigate issues already decided by the court that conducted the trial. Brazil allows interest to run on a foreign judgment during the pendency of the enforcement process, potentially adding substantial costs to Chevron should it adopt its traditional strategy of trying to delay the proceedings.

Brazil has one of the largest proven oil reserves in the world and produces 2.3 million barrels daily. The country is Chevron's second largest production market in Latin America and one of the top ten markets in the world for the oil giant's capital spending. Chevron announced in 2011 that it planned to invest an additional $3 billion in Brazil by 2014.

Chevron already faces $22 billion in possible civil and criminal penalties in Brazil related to an offshore spill and related cover-up last November in the Frade field, a $3.6 billion deep water oil project that is one of Chevron's biggest capital investments in the world. The Frade field is majority-owned and operated by Chevron, and has an estimated 300 million barrels in reserve.

Chevron also has two other significant offshore oil projects in development in the country, a large lubricant manufacturing plant, an industrial greases plant, and other smaller properties.

Pablo Fajardo, the 39-year-old lead lawyer for the Ecuadorians and the recipient of both the CNN "Hero" Award and the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize (considered the "Nobel" of the environment), has said the Ecuador rainforest communities intend to file actions in a small number of countries to collect the entire amount of the judgment.

"We fought for almost two decades in court to win a legitimate judgment against a large American oil company that continues to treat Ecuador and its people as second-class citizens," said Fajardo, who grew up in poverty working in Ecuador's oil fields.

"While Chevron might think it can ignore court orders in Ecuador, it will be impossible for Chevron to ignore court orders in countries like Brazil and Canada where it maintains substantial assets," he added.

The judgment in Ecuador resulted from an eight-year trial that produced more than 64,000 soil and water samples that pointed to extensive contamination at hundreds of Chevron oil production sites in a large swath of Ecuador's Amazon, known as the Oriente. The area was once one of the most bio-diverse ecosystems on earth.

Fajardo said that during the trial Chevron proposed that the Ecuador court use an arbitrary clean-up standard roughly 100 times more lax than required by law in the U.S., leading to charges it was discriminating against Ecuadorians. The company also threatened one judge with a criminal prosecution, tried to bribe another judge, lied about its scientific sampling results, and reportedly offered $1 billion to Ecuador's government to quash the case. See here. (A video that explains Chevron's substandard operational practices in Ecuador and efforts to corrupt the trial can be seen here.)

Representatives of the affected communities, who meet every two months in the rainforest in a body called the Assembly of the Affected Ones (Asamblea de Afectados), praised the filing of the action in Brazil. Citizens of Ecuador have suffered from high rates of cancer, spontaneous miscarriages, and oil-related diseases due to Chevron's substandard production practices. See here, here, and here.

"The time has come to use the force of law to make Chevron clean up its pollution," said Luis Yanza, a rainforest community leader who has been battling Chevron over the issue since the early 1990s. "No company, even one as rich and powerful as Chevron, is above the law."

The filing of the second enforcement action also comes at a time when Chevron shareholders are rebelling against company management over the risk posed by the Ecuador court judgment.

Last month, Chevron CEO John Watson suffered a stunning reprimand when investors holding over 38% of the company's shares (representing $73 billion worth of stock) voted for a resolution that directly challenged his authority because of the Ecuador case. Recently, 40 institutional shareholders representing $570 billion under management - including the New York state pension fund - urged the company to settle the Ecuador litigation.

Testing available to students at no cost

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. More than 40,000 student athletes in Arizona have taken advantage of computerized baseline concussion evaluations offered by Mayo Clinic in the program's first year. That amounts to nearly 40 percent of the state's roughly 100,000 high school athletes. Baseline concussion evaluations measure how the brain is working before injury, and are mandatory tests for professional and college athletes.

Mayo covers the cost of the cognitive evaluations for all high school and junior high school-aged interscholastic and club athletes in the state. The program was made possible through the support of benefactors and Mayo Clinic.

The test takes 8? minutes to complete, and athletes or their parents can share the results with health care providers of their choice. After a concussion, the test can be repeated to determine if there has been a change in the cognitive capabilities of the athlete and, once symptoms have resolved, the test can be repeated to determine whether the athlete has returned to pre-injury baseline. The results of this test, combined with a thorough neurological evaluation, ensure that the health care provider can make an informed and objective determination on when and whether the athlete can safely resume normal activities and in the case of student athletes, when they can return to their sport.

"The diagnosis of concussion, assessment of its severity and knowing when an athlete can return to physical activity, competition, work or school is not always clear," says Mayo neurologist David Dodick, M.D., at Mayo Clinic in Arizona and president of the American Headache Society. "Having a baseline concussion assessment for each athlete will assist in a physician's ability to identify and quantify a change in brain function, and determine if and when the athlete has returned to his or her baseline."

After a concussion, if an athlete continues to play or returns to play too early, there is a significant risk of experiencing another concussion. Dr. Dodick adds.

"Repeat concussions may take longer to resolve and come with a risk of permanent neurological damage or, rarely, death," he says. Children, adolescents and female athletes appear to be at a higher risk for concussions, and may also take longer to recover.

While the importance of baseline testing is clear, the results should be used with a comprehensive neurological evaluation. Although the majority of concussions resolve relatively quickly, some athletes may experience symptoms that may persist for months or longer. The medical care and rehabilitation of these athletes is best achieved by a multidisciplinary team of health professionals with expertise in the evaluation and management of concussions.

Providing this baseline assessment also highlights the importance of safeguarding the brain health of young athletes.

"We are pleased that so many parents, coaches, trainers and students have seen the importance of baseline testing and have opted for this free testing," Dr. Dodick says. "But there is still a long way to go; hopefully, this initiative will be a significant step toward having all youth and adults throughout our state who are involved in competitive or recreational sporting activities establish a baseline."

The baseline concussion testing initiative began soon after the passage of Arizona Senate Bill 1521, which requires that high school athletes who have sustained a concussion be ineligible to return to play until a licensed health care provider has cleared them to return. The law also requires schools to educate coaches, students and parents about the dangers of concussions.

Highways-student loan deal poised for votes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican leaders pushed a sweeping highways-student loans package salvaging millions of construction jobs and maintaining low interest rates on millions of new college loans toward a House vote Friday even as conservative groups mounted a last-minute and likely futile campaign against it.

Favorable action by the Senate on what would be the only big jobs measure Congress has enacted this year was assured. Leaders there held out hope they could to get it done Thursday night but ran into procedural hurdles. Lawmakers in both parties hoped to get an early start bragging about a rare accomplishment four months before the election.

The conservative Heritage Action for America and the anti-tax Club for Growth urged a 'no' vote on the bill in emails Thursday to lawmakers, warning that it will be counted as a key vote on their legislative scorecards.

"This massive bill spends too much money, will continue taxpayer bailouts for highway spending, and keeps subsidies that have contributed directly to skyrocketing tuition rates," Club for Growth spokesman Barney Keller said.

Despite the backlash from such core conservative groups, the bill's supporters expressed confidence. "We got a pretty good reception in conference this morning," Rep. Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania said after House Republicans met on the bill.

After three months of haggling, House and Senate negotiators reached agreement on the package Wednesday. It includes a two-year, $100 billion spending plan for highway and mass transit construction and repairs, $6 billion to prevent rates on new student loans after June 30 from doubling, and a five-year renewal of federal flood insurance subsidies.

The bill gives states more flexibility over how they spend federal highway aid, consolidates transportation programs and shortens environmental delays to get highway projects built faster. It also expands a loan guarantee program aimed at increasing private investment in infrastructure projects.

Democrats and Republicans each gave way on issues important to their political constituencies, but both sides also scored victories. Republicans sacrificed proposals to force a go-ahead with the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline in the Midwest and to prevent the Obama administration from regulating coal ash as a hazardous toxin. Democrats gave ground on environmental protections blamed for stalling some road projects and safety, biking and pedestrian programs.

House Republican leaders pitched the package to their members in a closed-door meeting Thursday morning that was interrupted by news of the Supreme Court's health care decision.

Rep. Bill Cassidy, R-La., said some conservatives have doubts about voting for the package after House negotiators dropped a House-passed provision requiring the government to approve the Canadian border-Gulf Coast Keystone pipeline. President Barack Obama has vowed to veto the bill if it included the pipeline measure.

But Cassidy said, "There's also concern among conservatives to have a decent infrastructure and some certainty for our (state transportation departments) back home and our contractors so they can build roads.... It is a mixed bag. I will just tell you that." He said he was still undecided on how he would vote.

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, chairman of the influential House Republican Study Committee, will vote against the package, his office said.

Florida Republican Rep. Steve Southerland, one of the deal's negotiators, said he expects the package to win passage, explaining that no one has argued a short-term extension is in the nation's best interest and that contractors want and deserve certainty. "I think we will have the votes," he said.

Without the bill or a short-term extension, federal aid transportation aid to states would expire, as well as the government's ability to collect federal gasoline and diesel taxes ? 18.4 cents a gallon and 24.4 cents, respectively ? that fund most of those programs. Democrats estimate that would cost an existing 1.8 million transportation-related jobs, as well as forgo another estimated 1 million jobs the bill would create.

Similarly, interest rates for on new subsidized Stafford loans for college students would double to 6.8 percent beginning Sunday. That automatic increase was approved by Congress five years ago to save money. The bill extends the current 3.4 percent rate for 12 months, saving some 7.4 million students an average $1,000 in higher interest costs over the life of the loan, typically a decade or longer.

Congressional leaders rolled the highway and student loan into a single bill because both are financed in part with pension law changes. Aides said the pension proposals might end up raising more than $18 billion in the final legislation.

The extension of the federal flood insurance program was added to the bill this week. It protects 5.6 million households and businesses and addresses a shortfall arising from claims after 2005's Hurricane Katrina by reducing insurance subsidies for vacation homes and allowing for increases in premiums.

JPMorgan Bails Out Junius Fund - Zacks Investment Research

JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM - Analyst Report) is set to bail out its cash-strapped Junius Real Estate Partners Fund by investing $110 million as the initial capital. This move was necessitated after the fund failed to generate adequate capital amidst tough financial backdrop.

In early 2011, JPMorgan?s asset management division had launched Junius Fund to earn good returns by focusing on identification and execution of new investment opportunities through a strong investment team backed by the solid infrastructure of the company?s asset management division. Currently, the fund is developing properties worth $465 million. These properties include a resort in Virginia, an equestrian farm, along with a shopping mall in Chicago and investments in an Ohio-based hotel chain

Prior to the recent crisis, several firms supplied capital to their real estate funds to keep them well-poised to execute any new investment opportunity that comes along. However, with crashing of the real estate market and the stringent regulatory landscape, the banks have become cautious of perilous investments. Moreover, in such a tough economic scenario, wary investors do not want to jeopardize their money by investing in a relatively inexperienced fund. Consequently, JPMorgan had to announce the slowdown in its efforts of building the $750 million fund.

With Junius in dearth of sufficient funds, the parent company had to pitch in for the rescue effort. JPMorgan?s plans to invest $110 million of capital may not comply with the Volcker rule. The rule suggests that banks should not invest more than 3% into their own funds. However, some solicitors are of the opinion that JPMorgan will unlikely be in trouble because the fund operates as a non-conventional real estate fund, and as a result does not fall within the purview of the rule.

The real estate market is not booming as it did prior to the crisis. This has prompted several big organizations to reduce their activities in this arena. Banking giant Citigroup, Inc.(C - Analyst Report) vended its real estate fund to Apollo Global Management, LLC (APO - Snapshot Report). Other big names like Morgan Stanley (MS - Analyst Report) have initiated new funds, but with a relatively lower target.

Conclusion

JPMorgan?s efforts to keep the fund balanced are credible. The company hired some of the prominent faces of the real estate world to manage the fund. Moreover, it was ready to provide 3% of the fund?s capital requirement and had supported it strongly through its flagship asset management division. However, with the sluggish economic recovery, especially the real estate market showing no signs of betterment, the fund was in danger of running into trouble. Therefore, we believe that JPMorgan?s rescue effort is justified.

Currently, JPMorgan retains a Zacks #4 Rank, which translates into a short-term Sell rating. Considering the fundamentals, we also maintain our long-term Neutral recommendation on the stock.

How To Know How My Ex Boyfriend Feels About Me - His Perspective

How To Know How My Ex Boyfriend Feels About Me - His Perspective

Are you constantly trying to search for clues that your ex boyfriend still loves you, but instead are hitting your head up against a brick wall? If this is your situation right now it is crucial that you don't panic. With a little help and advice you will soon be able to understand exactly what he thinks about you now and what your chances are of getting him back again are. Essentially, it is all about understanding the male psyche and why they behave in the way that they do. He will be giving you off specific signals after the break up, it is up to you to identify what these mean and how to use this information to plan getting him back.

It really isn't as complicated as you might think, you just have to be more intuitive and learn to read between the lines. It actually gets quite addictive when you learn to do it properly and you can actually see what he is really thinking. The truth is that girls will stand a much better chance of getting their guys back if they know this stuff. This is because they have the upper hand and can plan their next moves according to his behaviour. It is so much better than going into things blindly and making a whole pile of mistakes.

Your Ex Boyfriend Always Calls To Check Up On You

You should be able to go with your intuition here. What is the purpose of his call? If he is only ringing up to be friendly out of guilt that is one thing, but when he is constantly calling you and asking what you are up to, that is an entirely different matter. When he starts to ask you about your daily life then this is a sure sign that all he is interested in is keeping you away from another guy. His curiosity will get the better of him and this will mean that he starts to keep tabs on you, as if you are still his.

You can use this to your advantage to speed up the reconciliation process. Jealousy is a pretty effective way to get your ex boyfriend to take notice and quickly. Don't be too obvious about it though or it will become clear to him what you are up to. You don't want him to mistrust you or think that you are pathetic and playing games here. You can allude to the fact that you are busy, casually drop in the names of some people that he doesn't know and leave it at that. His mind will be racing about all the possibilities. This is a pretty effective technique and you don't even have to lie.

Watch out for his tone of voice too on the phone. Is he accusing or aggressive? This could well mean that he feels possessive of you and still sees you as his girl. Does he sound a little down in the dumps or nervous? These are also clues that he is confused and just wants to hear your voice.

He wants to know that he made the right decision to break up with you, the fact that he is calling to reassure himself is a very good sign. You must take control when he does call you however, you don't want to be giving him the affirmation that he wanted, instead you have to make him realise that he made a stupid mistake in breaking up with you. This can be done rather powerfully if you do things right.

He Is Very Quick To Let You Know That He Is Still Single

When your ex boyfriend is interested in getting back together with you, he will want to know what your circumstances are. He will be trying to find out if you are dating another guy or if you have moved on emotionally from him. You should therefore watch what he says and what he asks you. He will want to know what is really going on from your own mouth, but he will do so in a roundabout way. The last thing that he wants is to appear obvious and ask you outright if you are seeing anyone. This would bruise his ego way too much, so he does it a cleverer way.

When he is constantly trying to allude to the fact that he is single or that he is not interested in starting a new relationship, he will be trying to see how you react. He will also want you to divulge what your stance is on the whole dating thing like he did. This way he can do it a lot more casually and not look like a dork in the process. If he is planning on asking you out again he will want to know if you are available first. Therefore, when he tells you that he is still available, he wants you to know it. This is no accident.

The reason that he does this is because he wants you to remain available too, not to go off and start looking around. This will give him time to figure out what to do next when he knows that you are not back on the horse. So you can take this as one of the signs that he wants you back. He may even want you to make the first move, but you are not going to do that, you are going to wait for him to make the effort. He may not be entirely ready to confess his love for you yet, but by being open about his romantic situation, he is laying the foundation for when he does pluck up the courage.

Now you probably don't want to be waiting around forever for him to make up his mind. Chances are that you want him back now. There are a few things that you can do to speed this process up. You must be vague about your dating situation when he starts talking about his own. Do not give too much away and this will naturally intrigue him. His mind will start going into overdrive about all the men that you could be dating.

Another powerful strategy to use is that you should not be too available when he calls you. Don't answer immediately or reply back to texts for a while at least. This will make him think that you have better things to do than sit around waiting for him. When you do this he will be forced into action because he will realise that he is in danger of losing you. Do these things and you will get your ex boyfriend back even quicker.

Your Next Steps

Now that you know how to read some of the signs that he still likes you, your next move is to understand all about the no contact rule and why it is so important if you want to win him back. There are many key techniques to learn here so this is crucial. When you do it correctly you will make him attracted to you again and intrigue him.

Another thing that will drastically improve your chances of getting him back is to do it through Facebook. There are several powerful Facebook tricks that you can use to your advantage that will make him regret the break up and start to chase you again. Many women have used these strategies with successful results and you can too.

Common Ventilation Systems Roofing Companies In Houston

If there is one situation that homeowners need to avoid, it would be having excess heat and moisture trapped in the attic.? This usually arises from improper or nonexistent roof ventilation.? It can also give way to a variety of problems that can pose serious risks to the integrity of your roof system and adjacent house structures.

So, a roofing company Houston homeowners can trust is one that makes sure that the right roof ventilation system is in place when doing any type of roof project.? Here are some of the most common roof ventilation systems Houston roofing companies install:

Gable Vents.? Usually found in olderHouston homes, gable vents are positioned in a house?s gable sides.? These vents allow the air in the attic to enter and go out from one side to the other.? However, a gable vent system is quite outdated and does not have the same efficiency as the newer roof ventilation systems.

Roof Vents And Fans.? This system usually works well when the lower intake vents are partnered with the right number of roof vents.? However, you need an experienced contractor to determine the right balance in order for the system to be efficient. Unfortunately, this kind of ventilation system also provides entrances for rodents and insects, too.

Ridge Vents.? The ridge vents system, used together with soffit vents, is considered the most efficient ventilation system by far.? In this system, fresh air is drawn in through the soffit vents while the hot air inside the attic gets out through the ridge vents.? The use of ridge vents and soffit vents is quite a popular choice among Houston homeowners who want to avoid trapped heat and moisture in their attics, especially during the humid and hot Houston summers.

To find out the perfect roof ventilation system for your home, ask the advice of experienced roofing professionals.? If you want a comprehensive and honest assessment of your roof ventilation needs, fill out our online form on http://www.alltexexteriors.com/ or call (888) 669-1806 to arrange for our roofing specialist to conduct onsite inspection, free of charge.

Five Cool Places for Health and Wellness | Laini's Little Pocket Guide

They say you can?t take care of others until you can take care of yourself. Well, here are our suggestions at Little Pocket Guide of how to go about doing just that: five cool places for health and wellness.

by Carrie Havranek

We?re lucky here in the Lehigh Valley. We?ve got a lot of people who are dedicated to the connection to mind, body and spirit, whether that?s massage, yoga, chiropractic, health food, supplements, or herbs. Here are five cool places for health and wellness?broadly speaking.

?

1.?Healthy Alternatives and Cafe Santosha, Trexlertown.

Once you?re finished shopping for your weekly dose of healthy food, take a break at the onsite Cafe Santosha, which serves healthy, delicious food for every palate?carnivore to vegan, with items that are gluten free, too. Owned by nutritionist Diane Burg, Healthy Alternatives is in the most unassuming location?a strip mall of all places?but is anything but cookie cutter in its approach. Don?t miss the soups.? 7150 Hamilton Blvd., Trexlertown; 610-366-9866.

2. JBN Wellness Center, Bethlehem.

You might be surprised to find out there?s a whole group of wellness businesses in the middle of an industrial park in Bethlehem, but there you have it. Just Be Natural Fitness and Nutrition Center is the flagship business there, but you?ll also find Kula Heart Yoga, MultiSport Fitness, chiropractors Dr. Philip O?Brien and Christopher Amato, massage therapist Heidi Zimmerman, and reflexologist and health coach Stephanie M. Shelly, among others. People refer to this as the ?JBN Building? in Lehigh Valley Industrial Park V, off 512.

3.?Nature?s Way, Easton

One of the oldest health food stores in the Valley if not the oldest, Nature?s Way Market has been serving people for 37 years with its helpful service, extensive selection of herbs, natural supplements, homeopathic remedies, and vitamins. It?s also a full-stop grocery store, with local, fresh, seasonal produce, local honey and dairy and meats, lots of options for vegetarians, and an enviable bulk section that includes fresh peanut butter. Free mini-consultations are available with the on-staff herbalist David Harder on Thursdays. 143 Northampton Street, Easton; 610-253-0940.

4.?Rest Urban Wellness Studio, Easton

Rebecca Stephens opened this oasis in downtown Easton five years ago and offers a number of modalities from massage to reflexology to biofeedback to applied kinesthesiology, and more. The difference? The massage she specializes in is two hours, which she says you really need? in order to receive the full mind, body, and spirit experience. ?I give the massage I would like to get,? she says. 24 N. 2nd Street, Easton. Find her on Facebook or call 908-892-1910.

5.?Vitality Natural Healthcare Center, Emmaus.

It?s not surprising that a natural health and wellness center is based in Emmaus, the home of Rodale. For fifteen years, it?s been the center for chiropractor Dr. Darin Mazepa, but a visit here is about much more than just getting an adjustment. He?s a practitioner of Network Spinal Analysis, a blending of chiropractic, acupressure, craniosacral and other modalities, designed to stimulate the body?s natural capacity to heal. You can also receive nutritional counseling, and endocrine testing, along with therapies involve herbs, music, and more. 134 Main Street, Emmaus; 610-965-0023.

What about you? What?s your favorite place for health and wellness?

Carrie Havranek is a writer in Easton who believes yoga, farmers? markets, Reiki, and regular visits to her chiropractor help her stay well. Laughter helps, too.

French film noir set in Venice

Evidently, Venice is a lot like New York. You will find a lot of writers and realtors there.

One fateful day, a French mystery novelist walks into a former fashion model?s real estate agency. It will be the start of a very complicated relationship for the lead characters in Andr? T?chin??s latest pseudo-thriller, Unforgivable, which opens this Friday in New York.

There seems to be an inverse relationship between Francis?s creative productivity and his domestic happiness. He came to Venice to write in seclusion but took up with Judith instead. At least she had the perfect rental for him: a secluded old villa on the island of Sant?Erasmo.

Happy with his new home and lover, Francis has not written a word in months. Fortunately or unfortunately, that will all change when his ostensibly grown daughter Alice comes to visit.

Either to get back at Francis or her vastly more responsible ex, Alice disappears without warning, apparently taking up with a penniless aristocratic drug dealer. Not inclined to let things be, Francis hires the half-retired private detective Anna Maria, a woman from Judith?s past, to shadow his daughter across the continent.

As Francis?s escalating emotional neediness turns to jealousy, he hires Anna Maria?s delinquent son to shadow Judith in turn.

Based on Philippe Djian?s novel, Unforgivable is a perfect example of T?chin??s knack for skirting the boundaries of the thriller genre without fully crossing over. He toys with plenty of noir conventions, such as a mysterious disappearance, a smarmy underworld figure, and a whole lot of skulking about the streets of Venice.

Yet, T?chin? is more concerned with his characters? extreme emotions?the passion, jealousy, and contempt driving their actions.

Perfectly cast as Francis, Andr? Dussollier projects the appropriate sophistication, arrogance, and insecurity, while still connecting with something fundamentally human and sympathetic about the character.

However, the real pleasure of Unforgivable is seeing Carole Bouquet (the most underappreciated Bond Girl ever in the pinnacle film of the Roger Moore era, For Your Eyes Only) as Judith, the mature femme fatale. Indeed, it is a smart, delicately calibrated performance.

Capitalizing on the mysterious Venetian backdrop, Unforgivable is like film noir for those who avoid onscreen violence and cynicism. It is literate and worldly, yet compassionately forgiving of its characters? self-defeating foibles (title notwithstanding).

Highly recommended for French film connoisseurs, it opens this Friday (June 29) in New York at the IFC Center downtown and the Beekman Theatre uptown.

Beyonce Tribute to Michael Jackson: Remembering the King of Pop, Pure Swag

Michael Jackson died June 25, 2009, or three years ago this week. In a touching tribute to MJ, Beyonce remembers the artist who changed her life forever.

The "Crazy in Love" singer and new mom wrote a touching message on her website about Jackson on Monday, Michael Jackson's death anniversary.

Beyonce, 30, said her first producer had her listen MJ's "Who's Loving You" on repeat. "What he wanted me to learn was his soul," the star recalls.

"You could hear his soul. It's something that's God given."

"For whatever reason he could evoke more emotion than an adult," she went on. "It was these little things he did that were pure swag."

And the mother of Blue Ivy Carter and wife of rapper Jay-Z credits the King of Pop for teaching her that "sometimes you have to forget technique."

"Michael Jackson changed me forever, and helped me to become the artist I am," Beyonce writes, adding simply "Thank you Michael."

Jackson died on June 25, 2009 from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol, given to him by Dr. Conrad Murray. He was only 50 years old.

Consumer confidence slipped in June

(AP) ? Americans can't seem to shake their uneasy feeling about the economy.

Consumer confidence fell in June for the fourth straight month as worries about jobs and the overall economy outweighed relief at the gas pump and an improvement in the housing market, according to a private research group.

The decline was modest; the Conference Board said Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index fell from 64.4 in May to 62 in June. But the four-month slide from 71.6 in February is significant and corresponds with a slowdown in hiring by U.S. companies over the same period.

The index is widely watched because consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of U.S. economic activity. A reading of 90 indicates a healthy economy. The index hit an all-time low of 25.3 in February 2009.

The latest survey shows that despite lower gas prices, Americans are still worried about stagnant hiring, low home values, the choppy stock market and a worsening European economy that some fear will hurt the U.S.

"We're trying to break free from this orbit, and we haven't been able to," said Mark Vitner, senior economist at Wells Fargo Economics. "Job market concerns will always trump swings in energy prices."

Alyson Seligman, who lives in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., agrees. Seligman, who runs a small public relations firm, said lower gas prices haven't caused her to feel much more confident in the economy.

"Anything can turn on a dime," she said. "You have to be prepared."

Worries about job and income growth weighed the heaviest on Americans in the index, which was based on a survey conducted from June 1 through June 14 of about 500 randomly selected people nationwide. The margin of error for the index is plus or minus 5.5 points.

Those stating jobs are "hard to get" increased slightly to 41.5 percent from 40.9 percent, while those expecting more jobs in the months ahead declined to 14.1 percent from 15.4 percent. The proportion of consumers expecting an increase in their incomes declined to 14.8 percent from 15.7 percent.

Consumers' dwindling confidence since February corresponds with a sharp slowdown in hiring. Hiring averaged 96,000 during the combined period of March, April and May. That marked a slowdown from the average of 252,000 a month in the prior three months.

The strong hiring during the winter helped lift the Consumer Confidence Index from 40.9 in October to the highest reading it had been in a year during February. But in the following months that hiring has slipped, so has consumer confidence.

Meanwhile, a measure of the number of people applying for unemployment benefits over the past month has reached a six-month high, the government said last week. That suggests June could be another lackluster month for hiring. The government releases June data on July 6.

Americans also are grappling with declines in their retirement funds. After rallying earlier in the year, the stock market has lost its steam since the beginning of May amid concerns about the economy both here and abroad. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has fallen nearly 6 percent since early May.

On the news of declining consumer confidence, major stock indexes drifted between slight gains and losses on Tuesday, following steep losses the day before.

Still, Americans have some reasons to be optimistic. A widely watched home price index, released Tuesday, showed that home prices rose in nearly all major U.S. cities in April. That's the second straight month that prices in The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index have increased in a majority of U.S. cities.

Additionally, gasoline prices have fallen sharply from a peak of $3.94 in early April to a national average of $3.40 per gallon Tuesday, according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service. And experts say gas could fall another 11 cents by July 4.

Despite those two positives, Americans are cautious about spending. Several companies, from restaurants to home goods sellers, have said recently that customers are pulling back on spending unless they are lured into stores by big discounts.

Bed Bath and Beyond last week forecast lower earnings for its current fiscal quarter that started in late May and said it needed to use more coupons to get people to spend. Furniture chain Ethan Allen Inc. said customer traffic is slowing and shoppers are taking more time to make purchasing decisions.

And Darden Restaurants Inc., which operates Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants, expects earnings that are short of Wall Street expectations and said customers were turned off by a $1 increase for Red Lobster's dish "Festival of Shrimp."

Given growing uncertainty about the economy, Michael P. Niemira, chief economist at The International Council of Shopping Centers trade group, on Tuesday trimmed his sales forecast for June by a 0.5 percentage point.

He now expects revenue at stores opened at least a year to be up 3 percent to 3.5 percent. That follows a 4 percent rise in May.

Panel: Doctors should screen patients for obesity | Health and Fitness

Doctors should check weight and height for all patients to determine if they?re obese and refer them to intensive diet and exercise programs if necessary, according to new guidelines from a U.S. government-backed panel.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force said the guidelines echo its 2003 recommendations on screening for obesity, but take into account more recent evidence that adults can lose weight and keep it off with the right help.

?The good news is that even what you might consider to be modest rather than radical weight loss has tremendous health benefits,? including lowering diabetes risk and blood pressure, said Susan Curry, a member of the task force and dean of the University of Iowa College of Public Health in Iowa City.

?Losing 5 percent of your body weight has tremendous health benefits, and intensive behavioral counseling programs help you do that and sustain it,? Curry told Reuters Health. ?Your primary care provider can, we hope, help you to find evidence-based programs.?

The need to address weight gain nationally has grown as America tallies the health and economic costs of its obesity epidemic. More than two-thirds of the country?s adults can be classified as overweight or obese.

Effective weight-loss programs, Curry said, include both nutrition and exercise support. They should help people address any barriers they have to making ? and maintaining ? changes in their lifestyle.

Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (a ratio of weight in relation to height) of 30 or above. That?s equal to a five-foot, six-inch person weighing 186 pounds or a six-foot person at 221 pounds.

In evidence considered by the task force, intensive behavioral programs with at least 12 sessions typically helped people lose between nine and 15 pounds (4 and 6.8 kg), or about 6 percent of their original weight.

Those types of programs may also have an effect on diabetes risk, blood pressure and stomach fat, according to the new guidelines, published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. But there are still questions about any long-term impacts those interventions have on heart disease and death, for example.

Do drugs work?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved orlistat ? marketed as Xenical and alli ? for weight loss, but Curry and her colleagues said there wasn?t enough information about how well people fare when they go off the drug to make any recommendations related to its use.

Robert Klesges, a preventive medicine researcher from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, said once people stop taking orlistat, they tend to gain back any weight they lost.

With behavioral interventions including lifestyle changes, ?relapse? tends to be smaller, he told Reuters Health.

Klesges, who wasn?t involved in the new study, recommended people trying to lose extra weight incorporate meal replacements into their diet and weigh themselves regularly.

?Exercise is very important, (but) it?s much more important for weight-loss maintenance than weight loss,? he said. Some of the benefits of exercise, he said, come from the fact that it?s pretty difficult to eat a candy bar while running on a track, and people often don?t have much of an appetite for snacking right after they work out.

The task force didn?t review bariatric surgery as a potential intervention for obese people in the new guidelines.

According to data from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, about 220,000 people had those procedures in 2009.
