Elegant sport of fencing | Homer Tribune

Adventure movies often include scenes of sword battles, looking much like a stylized dance to the uninitiated. Fencing is a one-on-one sport that requires agility, balance and foresight. Figuring out what your opponent is going to do next can save your life. Or your game.
Fencing is being taught through the summer, Mondays and Thursdays at the Homer High School with sessions from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. as a part of the City of Homer Community Recreation spring and summer program.
Scott Meyer and Ethan Ford are the professionals who facilitate this sport, offered for ages 13 and up. Level one combatants learn the basic stance, attack and defense strategies and will gain hands-on experience in judging and combat.
Level two participants smooth and perfect the foil work and are introduced to the epee. Emphasis is on training for state competition. A full uniform is required within one month of starting the classes in order to continue with the course. Some equipment is available.
