Canada's fighter bombers to be more costly

The financial straits of Canada?s allies have caught up with the next generation fighter bomber that Ottawa plans to buy: Both the United States and the jet maker are now confirming the average cost of the F-35 Lightning will rise after order delays by cash-strapped governments.

It?s further heartburn for the Harper government, with Opposition parties contrasting Conservative plans to delay old-age security benefits in the years ahead with plans to sink upward of $9-billion into 65 stealth jetfighters.

The Pentagon this week confirmed it would postpone orders for 179 F-35s to save $15.1-billion and allow more time for testing. Italy announced Tuesday it would cut its order and Britain has said it will wait until 2015 to decide its purchase.

Acting Pentagon acquisition chief Frank Kendall told reporters on Tuesday that the U.S. decision and any delays in international orders would drive up the average price per unit of the F-35, the Pentagon's costliest weapons program.

Likewise, in Oslo, Lockheed Martin Corp. executive vice-president Tom Burbage told reporters that the U.S. decision to drag out its purchases of the F-35 would increase the price of the plane somewhat.

?It will raise the overall average cost of the total procurement of all the airplanes bought,? Mr. Burbage said.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper was unmoved by the news, telling the Commons the Conservatives are sticking with the F-35 purchase and it would stay within budget.

A spokesman for Julian Fantino, Associate Minister of Defence, declined to say how allies? delays would affect Canada?s purchase or how the rising average cost would boost the price paid.

Mr. Fantino gave the impression this week that Canada is now open to changing its order. ?We all know that the economic reality of the day is certainly vastly different from when we started back on this project in 1997,? he told CBC-TV Monday. ?It would be ludicrous, I believe, for us to say that under no circumstances are we not prepared to discuss, to reconsider or consider.?

Canada has long said the jets would cost $75-million to $80-million each and officials say there is $800-million to $900-million set aside in the $9-billion jet purchase plan to handle rising costs.

Lockheed Martin told Reuters Tuesday it has informed Canadian officials the price of Canada?s planes would rise by a single-digit percentage as a result of the U.S. order slowdown.

Canada had originally planned to begin taking delivery of F-35s in late 2016 or early 2017, timing its order to ensure as many as possible were built in the same years as big orders from other allies. The cost of planes is affected by how many are built in the same year and Canada sought to find what officials call the ?sweet spot? for pricing.

Delays by allies have thrown such calculations in disarray and officials say countries are now once again trying to figure out what years would now be least expensive.

Canada has convened an early March meeting with other buyers at its embassy in Washington to discuss the situation.

?The entire program has not been without problems both in terms of timeline and cost estimates. And so having these discussions is a normal course,? Defence Minister Peter MacKay said.

Recreation & Sport: The Joy of Fly Fishing in New Brunswick

Cold Morning in Moncton, New Brunswick

I know I shouldn't complain but holy crap it's cold outside today. As much as I love fishing I have to be honest and say this is the type of day I much prefer to stay in my house. Even then it's chilly as our house is kind of old and has a few too many drafty areas.

This is the kind of day I love having a home office where I can close the door and crank the heat until my hands and brain work again.

Yeah, maybe I'm a wimpy, yet proud Canadian, but it's bloody cold out there this morning at -20 Celsius and if you include those gusts of wind it's more like ?30. My hands actually froze to the door knob coming back in with Honey earlier. Sure glad I didn't use my tongue to open the door like I usually do.

Should have taught Honey our pit bull to use the toilet but she still has to go out or bust. She can hold it for a long time but eventually she has to go. This morning she didn't take any time to sniff around the yard, she just did her business and wanted back in.

Well as bone chilling as it is outside today I'm in my nice warm office writing blog pots for my many blogs. It's nice to be able to work without freezing up, wish I could say the same thing about Windows operating system. Thinking about going with a Mac for our next computer and maybe using this one for a boat anchor. Now I just need a boat.

I'd tie a few flies for next years fishing excursions but my fingers don't work so well when my hands are cold and I can't make good flies with my gloves on, so maybe later when it warms up a bit more.

5 Reasons To Outsource Your Entire Business

Lots?of people?who?re new to outsourcing ask this question.

They?ve?heard?horror stories of projects that have dragged out for months. They?ve?heard of?people getting low-quality work. There are even a few cases of people?paying?and getting nothing in return.

But?here?s the?thing:
All of these horror stories happen to a?tiny minority of business owners. And it?often happens to those who don?t know the right way to outsource.

But?for those who do know the truth about outsourcing, you?ll see them?singing its?praises.

Truth?is,?NOTHING will help you grow your business faster than a handpicked?outsourcing?team!

Here?are five?reasons why business owners all over the world happily?outsource their?entire business? and why you should too:

Reason?1:
You get to focus on the ?high value? tasks.

There?s nothing worse than spending?hours doing a low-value task (like creating a graphic or writing?articles) when?you have other high-value tasks on your to-do list, like recruiting?joint?venture partners or drafting a marketing plan. Savvy business owners?know that?the key to business growth is to hand the low-value tasks to someone?else so?that you have time to focus on the high-value tasks.

Reason2:
A professional often can create better results.

I don?t know about you, but I?m far?from being an expert on a variety of business tasks, like graphics,?programming, design, copywriting and more. Sound familiar? Then start?outsourcing, because a professional will most certainly do a better job?since?he?s the expert.

Reason3:
A professional can often do it for cheaper than you.

Time is money, right? So every hour?you spend on a task may cost you $50, $100 or more. If you attach a?dollar?figure to your time and then start calculating how much it ?costs? you?to do a?job yourself, you may be startled to discover that a professional can?actually?do the job for less cost than you!

Example:?If your time?is worth $50 an hour, and it takes you an hour to write an article,?then that?article costs you $50 to do yourself. I bet you can find a competent?writer to?do the article for half the cost ? thereby saving you both time and?money!

Reason?4:
You?ll stop struggling to move forward.

One of the major reasons business?owners struggle to grow their business is because they spend too much?time?struggling with daily tasks. For example, it may take a beginner an?entire day?to install a script on a website. But a professional could do the same?task in?as little as 10 minutes.

Point?is, stop?struggling. Stop trying to climb steep learning curves. Stop wasting?time?learning how to do frustrating tasks. Just hire a professional to do it?instead!

Reason?5:
You?ll enjoy more free time.

You don?t have to be chained to your business 24?hours a day in order for it to grow and be successful. If you?outsource, you?can spend just a few hours a week working in your business. And that?frees you?to do the things you really enjoy, like spend time with your friends?and
family, enjoy your hobbies and do more traveling!

In?summary?

It?s?clear to?see why so many savvy business owners outsource their entire business?
and why?you should too.

But?before you?even think of hiring a freelancer, you need to learn the ropes. You?need to?make sure you the process is painless, productive and profitable.

And that?s why you need to click here to check out the Hands Off Success System for outsourcing. Do it now, because you won?t be disappointed!

In Frankfurt, Europe's banking capital, Occupy soldiers on

Even amid last week's record low temperatures in Europe, a hardy group of protesters kept Frankfurt's Occupy encampment going between towering bank buildings. ?

The cold snap gripped much of Europe, freezing rivers, interrupting barges, and threatening heating sources. But it seemed to invigorate the anti-inequality activists in Germany?s financial capital of Frankfurt. The stalwart protesters there are one Europe?s main surviving ? and thriving ? Occupy Movement encampments.

Since October, hundreds of residents have been bivouacking in tents in a quaint park directly across from the European Central Bank. Last week, as temperatures plunged to this winter?s low of -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit), a core group of 38 held their ground and slept in their tents ? a survival challenge that was both physical and ideological.?

"It?s important that at least a few of us stay here to give others strength,? says J?rgen Harter, the software engineer who is the encampment superintendent of sorts, repairing cables, providing water, putting up tents, fine-tuning the logistics of a 50-or-so-tent village. Mr. Harter says he is fighting for a society that is more humane and less ruled by the power of consumption and money. "And for that, it?s worth it to fight ? and to freeze," he says.

While the spectacular rise of the worldwide Occupy movement has been followed by its withering away in much of the world, Occupy Frankfurt has established itself as a peaceful, accepted voice ? a testimony, some say, to the tradition of tolerance and openness of this old city of commerce.?

When police broke up the Berlin camp last month, the Frankfurt camp gained visibility. This week people traveled to Frankfurt from Spain and the Netherlands to get some occupy know-how. Proudly, Harter talks of "occupy tourism."

Squeezed between the banks? shimmering glass and steel towers and the city's opera house, theater, and posh designer stores, the occupiers are a reminder of a hidden side of this wealthy city. "This location is part of our identity," says Harter, who says he has camped there for the better part of the past four months despite living just a few subway stops from the encampment.

"Nobody is afraid of us. We?re not aggressive. We reject violence. We don?t want to verbally aggress anybody. The bankers who work here are also human beings," Harter says.

This fall, Frankfurt?s Occupy camp was a haven for discussions ? on capitalism, education, and culture. But then critics started complaining that the group had no focus anymore, no real mission. Movement supporters argue that the movement?s raison d??tre lies in the sheer power of its presence. ?

For now, the main battle is to survive the cold. On the frigid day I visit the camp, white frost has wrapped the camp in an eerie quiet. A string of protest signs swing in the air, the only visible signs of life. "Euroland will soon be over," one sign reads. "You occupy the money, we occupy the world," another says. "Break the dictatorship of financial markets!?

Braving the wind, Harter inspects the campsite. A few weeks ago the ground was littered with cables. Harter put them all away for safety. The cold made the water pipes he installed freeze. He wants to insulate them. "It looks like we?re going to be here for the long haul," he says. "Maybe one, two years."?

Harter goes about slapping shoulders, sharing jokes. "Come on, the sun is shining!" he tells a grumpy-looking man. Gas isn?t working, somebody complains. "I promise," he reassures, "you?ll get gas. You know I have connections!" His voice radiates confidence and everyone is welcome. Every day local bakeries deliver leftover rolls to the camp?s mess, a wide, spacious tent equipped with a kitchen. Neighborhood residents come and cook. Because the water pipes have frozen, campers get water from the opera house, just across the street ? 100 liters a day.

One of the biggest benefits is the human exchange, the protesters say ? the things protesters and observers learn just by meeting and talking with each other.?There are, for example, the investment banker Harter got to know, who confessed that in spite of the money and power he had, he felt lonely, and the prominent people who take the time to stop by after a nearby fundraiser. Often people tell Harter, "I couldn?t do it, but go on!"

The Frankfurt occupy-ers do not expect the world to change overnight. Even if the movement dies, as it already has in many cities, they see the mere fact that US President Obama mentioned economic unfairness in his State of the Union speech in January as a sign the movement has had an impact.
