IPod of Thermostats Saves Energy With Pizzazz: Rich Jaroslovsky

January 04, 2012, 8:02 PM EST

By Rich Jaroslovsky

Jan. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Apple engineer Tony Fadell was as responsible as anyone short of Steve Jobs for introducing the iPod and iPhone to the world. Now he?s turned his attention to a device as commonplace as it is boring: your home thermostat.

Fadell?s Silicon Valley start-up, Nest Labs, has introduced a $249 thermostat designed to learn your habits and preferences and program itself to save energy without sacrificing comfort.

I?ve been testing two Nests in my home for a month and have come away impressed with their ease of use and the intelligence behind them. Boring, they aren?t.

In size and shape, the Nest resembles the familiar round thermostats made by Honeywell, but the similarity ends there. The Nest is gorgeous, with a silvery outer ring that seems to complement every paint job. Instead of an analog dial, it has a multifunction digital display, black in repose, that comes to life when you touch or even just wave your hand in front of it.

You can adjust the temperature by turning the dial, while pushing it opens an array of settings and data, such as the current schedule the Nest has designed to heat and cool your home. A Wi-Fi connection lets you control it remotely, using the Nest website or apps for the iPhone, iPad and phones using Google Inc.?s Android operating system.

Apple DNA

There are other super-smart thermostats on the market, but none so overtly aimed at the gadget-buying consumer, as opposed to contractors or HVAC professionals. As befits Nest?s Apple DNA, even the packaging and accoutrements are an experience.

Accompanying the thermostat, for instance, is an off-white, vaguely egg-shaped object that, upon further inspection, proves to be an ingeniously designed screwdriver with four interchangeable bits -- all you should need to install your Nest if you?re a modestly confident do-it-yourselfer.

If you aren?t, Nest has partnered with Best Buy Co., which will dispatch its Geek Squad to install one for $119. In my case, an installer from the company put in one of my Nests, with me hanging over his shoulder. I did the other myself, with him hanging over mine.

The process was pretty straightforward. After removing the old thermostat, I attached the Nest?s base to the wall with two screws. I then attached the wires from the furnace to the stereo-speaker-style terminals in the thermostat (there are terminals for air conditioning, if you have that, as well). Then I popped the thermostat onto the base, went through the one-time Wi-Fi set-up and was done. The process took about 45 minutes.

Taking Time

The problem with many programmable thermostats is that they never get programmed, either because of their complexity or our own laziness. Nest sidesteps those issues by having you treat it essentially like a dumb thermostat for the first couple weeks, adjusting it manually until you?re comfortable.

To devise its schedule, Nest then marries this data to information gathered by its sensors, which register your comings and goings as well as conditions inside and outside the house.

The thermostat learned that I get up at 5:45 on weekdays and now begins warming the house then. On weekends, when we sleep in a bit, it waits longer to click on the furnace.

When the Nests weren?t cooling the house as much as I wanted overnight, it was easy to set a new temperature. I was rewarded for my extra energy savings by a small green leaf on the screen. When we went out of town for the weekend, the Nests sensed our absence and after a few hours automatically put themselves into ?Auto Away? mode, saving even more energy.

One Glitch

One Nest twice presented me with messages saying it wasn?t properly wired, along with diagrams of the allegedly faulty connections. (Let the record show this was the unit the Nest installer hooked up.)

The thermostat continued to operate normally. A Nest engineer concluded that it may have misinterpreted how my furnace shuts itself off to prevent overheating. If that?s the case, perhaps Nest Labs will address the bug in an over-the-air software update -- another advantage of the thermostats? connection to the Internet.

It?s too soon to tell whether and by how much Nest is able to shave my utility bills. But it already deserves credit for bringing some welcome innovation, not to mention pizzazz, to a product category in serious need of both.

(AP) ? No LeBron James? No Dwyane Wade?

No problem.

Mario Chalmers and Chris Bosh made up for the absence of the Miami's injured stars, carrying the Heat to a 116-109 triple overtime victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday night.

With James and Wade cheering from the bench, Bosh scored 33 points and Chalmers had 22 of his 29 points after the third quarter, including five of Miami's seven points in the third overtime.

"Coach said I had to be aggressive," Chalmers said.

Wade missed his second straight game with a sore left foot and James was held out after he turned his left ankle late in the third quarter of Wednesday night's 118-83 win over Indiana. Neither was in uniform.

Bosh hit a last-second, tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation to force the first overtime.

"It was a lucky shot," Bosh said.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said his team survived a test of its character.

"That game, the way it went down in the end, was an exercise in absolute endurance and mental and physical toughness," Spoelstra said.

"Both teams played their hearts out there at the end."

Joe Johnson had 20 points for the Hawks, who did not score in the third extra period. It was only the 10th time in NBA history that a team did not score in an overtime period.

Josh Smith added 17 points and 13 rebounds for Atlanta, which was seeking its second win over the Heat in four days but missed 15 of 46 free throws.

Hawks coach Larry Drew said his players ignored his warning against a letdown if James and Wade didn't play.

"There was a total, total mental letdown," Drew said, adding his players lacked the spark they had when they won 100-92 in Miami on Monday.

"I didn't see the sense of urgency I saw in Miami," Drew said. "The tendency is to let your guard down, and we certainly did tonight."

Bosh, the only healthy member of Miami's Big Three, also had 14 rebounds. Rookie Terrel Harris had nine points and 14 rebounds.

The Hawks led 93-90 when Bosh launched the tying 3-point attempt from the wing over Marvin Williams with only six-tenths of a second remaining in regulation.

Miami took a 67-54 lead on a 3-pointer by Chalmers midway through the third before the Hawks closed the quarter with a 16-1 run to take control.

Little-used rookie Ivan Johnson was a big surprise with 13 points for Atlanta. Johnson, an undrafted player from Cal State-San Bernardino, had a steal and jam to cut Miami's lead to one point and then closed the third quarter with two free throws to give the Hawks their first lead of the second half.

Ivan Johnson and Al Horford fouled out in the third overtime.

Drew said he turned to Ivan Johnson and Willie Green, who had 14 points, because he was "really searching" for players who showed "a sense of urgency."

Spoelstra said before the game that Wade "was a little bit more unlikely" than James to play. Afterward, Spoelstra said he was trying to protect Wade from a more serious injury.

"He's making progress with it, but we really want to take care of this before it's something that can linger," Spoelstra said.

Wade hurt his foot at Charlotte on Dec. 28.

James participated in pregame warmups but his status for Miami's game at New Jersey on Saturday remains uncertain.

"He's walking around and hopefully he'll be able to play soon," Spoelstra said. "Whether that will be Saturday, I don't know."

James and Wade were often active and animated as they watched from Miami's bench, at times leaping up as they reacted to plays.

James Jones and Shane Battier were the fill-in starters.

"I hope the guys realize it doesn't matter who's in the uniform, it's the standard of play," said Battier, who had nine points and played a lead role in defending Joe Johnson, who made only 7 of 20 shots from the field.

"I've been in a lot of games in my 10 years in the league and this is right up there," Battier said.

The Hawks, whose win at Miami gave the Heat their only loss, struggled with poor shooting as there were 17 lead changes in the first half.

Miami led 54-49 at halftime.

Notes: The Hawks' last triple-overtime game was a 123-121 loss at Houston on Feb. 22, 2004. ... G-F Tracy McGrady played 29 minutes off Atlanta's bench after coach Larry Drew said the veteran's status was uncertain due to a bruised knee. ... The Hawks play at Charlotte on Friday and host Chicago on Saturday to complete three games in three days. ... Heat F Mike Miller, recovering from hernia surgery, has been cleared for full contact. Spoelstra said he would ease Miller into action.

Demi Moore fears being unlovable (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Actress Demi Moore, who recently ended her six-year marriage to Ashton Kutcher, says her worst fear is finding she is "not worthy of being loved".

In an interview conducted just one week after Moore filed for divorce in November, the "Ghost" star opened up to her friend, British photographer Amanda De Cadenet, for the February edition of Harper's Bazaar magazine.

Moore, 49, did not directly address her split with Kutcher, the 33-year-old star of television comedy "Two and A Half Men." The marriage foundered after a San Diego woman went public about a brief fling she had with Kutcher.

But in a wide-ranging conversation with De Cadenet about insecurities, Moore said; "What scares me is that I'm going to ultimately find out at the end of my life that I'm really not lovable, that I'm not worthy of being loved. That there's something fundamentally wrong with me...and that I wasn't wanted here in the first place."

The marriage was Moore's third, and the 16-year age difference between her and Kutcher made them the subject of constant media attention.

Moore added that freedom for her meant, "Letting go of the outcome. Truly being in the moment. Not reflecting on the past. Not projecting into the future. That's freedom. Not caring more about what other people think than what you think. That's freedom.

"To not be defined by your wounds. Somebody wrote something to me that said, 'Don't let your wounds make you become someone you're not.' That's really powerful. And not taking life too seriously," she told De Cadenet.

The actress, who has recently lost weight and alarmed media by her thin appearance, also said she has had a "love-hate" relationship with her body but that now she accepted it.

"When I'm at the greatest odds with my body, it's usually because I feel my body's betraying me, whether that's been in the past, struggling with my weight and feeling that I couldn't eat what I wanted to eat, or that I couldn't get my body to do what I wanted it to do.

"I think I sit today in a place of greater acceptance of my body, and that includes not just my weight but all of the things that come with your changing body as you age to now experiencing my body as extremely thin -- thin in a way that I never imagined somebody would be saying to me, "You're too thin, and you don't look good."

Moore and De Cadenet are executive producers of a new TV interview series called "The Conversation" that is due to premiere on cable channel Lifetime later in 2012.

Storm trades Cash to Sky

The Seattle Storm has traded WNBA All-Star Swin Cash and forward Le'coe Willingham to the Chicago Sky for the No. 2 pick in the 2012 draft.

The teams announced the deal Monday. Seattle also sent a second-round pick to Chicago, the 23rd overall.

Cash, of McKeesport High School, averaged 12.7 points and 6.2 rebounds in her four seasons with the Storm and helped Seattle to the 2010 WNBA title.

Baseball

Hanley Ramirez says he'll accept a position switch to third base so Miami Marlins newcomer Jose Reyes can play shortstop. When Reyes signed a $106 million, six-year deal with Miami last month, there was speculation Ramirez was unhappy about being supplanted at short. But new manager Ozzie Guillen sold Ramirez on the idea.

Soccer

U.S. coach Pia Sundhage is gathering 29 players for a nine-day training camp before paring the roster to 20 for Olympic women's soccer qualifying. The group will train from Jan. 7-15 in Carson, Calif. Players will then head to Vancouver, British Columbia, for the qualifying tournament for the North and Central American and Caribbean region. The Americans won the 2008 Olympic gold medal. They play the Dominican Republic Jan. 20, Guatemala two days later and Mexico Jan. 24. The top two teams in the group advance to the semifinals Jan. 27, with both semifinal winners qualifying for the London Olympics. All 29 players attended a December training camp.

Auto racing

Defending bike champion Marc Coma of Spain won the second stage of the Dakar Rally and took the category lead after the 185-mile leg. In cars, defending champion Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar captured the stage while Stephane Peterhansel of France pulled into the overall lead. This year's rally, considered one of the most dangerous in motor sports, has already claimed three lives.

Tennis

The United States lost to Denmark, 2-1, at the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia, with late-arriving Caroline Wozniacki and Frederik Nielsen beating Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Mardy Fish, 7-5, 6-3, in the deciding mixed doubles match. Fish gave the U.S. an opening victory in this Australian Open tuneup, defeating Nielsen, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4. The top-ranked Wozniacki made it to the tournament only four hours earlier on a flight from Thailand. She beat Mattek-Sands, 7-6 (4), 6-2 to tie the best-of-three series before the Danish pair combined to win mixed doubles.

? Sixth-seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy was eliminated and fifth-seeded Ivan Dodig of Croatia escaped in the first round of the Chennai Open in India.

Niners Nation :: Sunday Night Football Open Thread: Giants, Cowboys Battle For Final Playoff Spot

The 2011 NFL regular season is down to the final game. The Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants will square off on Sunday Night Football with the winner claiming the NFC East and the loser heading home. The winner welcomes the Atlanta Falcons next weekend and the loser potentially fires their coach. That's the best kind of football.

This should be a fairly intense game given what is at stake and the rivalry nature of the game. Plenty of folks are assuming Tony Romo and the Cowboys will blow this one. Prior to this week, Tony Romo had the highest 4th quarter QB rating in the NFL. While QB rating is far from the end all, be all of stats, it is still worth noting the number. It will be interesting to see how tonight's game plays out and if Romo or Manning is put in a position to win it late.

As we get ready for this game, we've got a bye week approaching and the 49ers opponent remains undetermined for two weeks from now. In the meantime, any suggestions for coverage of the four wild card round teams over the next seven days? There will be plenty to discuss about the 49ers, but a little wild card coverage won't hurt.
