Golf in Godzone: Steve ?Lied? to Tiger

?One has to wonder if Tiger Woods is missing his former caddie, Stevie Williams, more than he'll ever admit publicly.? In yet another enquiry regarding Tiger?s comeback and poor showing at the weekend, Charles Boyer headlines his article, ?Does Tiger Woods Miss Stevie Williams More Than We Might Think??
?
?Through the week, there were also times where his (Tiger) distance control and putting aim seemed a little off. That brings to mind something Woods' former caddie Stevie Williams said as an offhand remark back during the pair's heyday of winning nearly everything they entered. Paraphrasing, Williams quipped that sometimes he lied to his then top-player about distances, because he knew that when Tiger was excited or nervous, that he tended to hit the ball further than normal. The result of Williams fib was often magic, as we saw time and again.?
?
Tiger?s magic?aided by Steve?s white lies sounds credible but as to, ?a lot of help on the green reading putts? I?m not so sure. But for sure there doesn?t appear (on TV) to be the same chemistry and compatibility with Joe LaCava, Tiger?s current caddie.
?
Charles asks, ?Is he Joe LaCava simply a bag man who lets his golfers make all the calls?? Don?t think so and I agree with Lawrence Donegan who wrote soon after LaCava?s departure from Dustin Johnson, ?LaCava can certainly do his bit. He is an experienced caddie and has been in contention at major championships countless times with his former employer Fred Couples (and more recently with Johnson at last summer's Open Championship). He will not panic in tense situations and can be relied on to give good advice.?
?
Stranger things have happened on the golf tour especially when it comes to a player?s choice of caddie and Steve may be reinstated if Tiger continues to disappoint. Is that a Kiwi I?hear calling, "Yeah right!"?

For instance it could said that Darren Clarke made a strange decision to dump caddie John Mulrooney, who helped him land his first major championship at the Open in July. And has now appointed Phil "Wobbly" Morbey who?s major claim to fame appears to be that he previously caddied for Ian Woosnam.

Quote of the Day

?Caddies are a breed of their own. If you shoot a 66, they?ll say, ?Man, we shot a 66!? But go shoot 77 and they?ll say, ?Man he shot a 77!? ? Lee Trevino
