Burlington, ON: As a newcomer and holder of a Master?s degree in tourism from her home country, Aneta Romanova was having trouble finding a good job in Canada. She finally found career success after significantly improving her English language skills and knowledge of Canadian workplace culture at The Centre for Skills Development & Training.
?
Aneta and her husband arrived in Canada in May 2010. By July, Aneta had enrolled in Enhanced Language Training (ELT) Your Way and Job Search Workshops (JSW), two programs offered at The Centre in Burlington and Milton, and funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
?
?A friend of mine told me about The Centre as a place where I could do English lessons because that?s where I needed to improve,? said Aneta. She found part-time employment after being prepared to job search through JSW, and, while working, continued to improve her language skills through ELT Your Way.
?
?The ELT Your Way course offered me a program in which I could study in class as well as online if I was not able to make it to class,? said Aneta. ?Upon graduation of the ELT course I received a very good job offer in the hospitality business with a major hotel chain. I am very happy to be working in my field here in Canada.?
?
ELT Your Way is designed for internationally educated individuals who wish to upgrade their English language skills. It allows students to complete the 16-week course on a flexible schedule and partially online. In fall 2011, the ELT day program will change to a 12-week rather than an 8-week program. The expanded program gives newcomers more time to learn how to market themselves to employers; research their field and labour market trends; practice job search techniques such as interview skills; receive individual help and one-on-one employment counselling; practice business English; and improve in areas where they need help such as pronunciation.
?
The Centre is accepting registrations for programs starting soon: the next ELT session starts October 5 in Burlington, and ELT Your Way starts October 24 in Milton.
