Obama to take jobs plan on the road (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The White House says President Barack Obama will take his jobs plan on the road next Friday in a visit to Richmond, Va.

The trip on Sept. 9 will allow the president to begin selling the plan to the public a day after unveiling it before a joint session of Congress. It was confirmed by a White House official speaking on condition of anonymity ahead of a public announcement.

Obama will face a tough lift getting congressional Republicans to sign off on his proposals, which are expected to include a mix of tax credits and spending on infrastructure. He could benefit if he gets public sentiment behind the plan.

It comes as the economy is looking even weaker, with a new jobs report showing employers stopped adding jobs in August.

Climateer Investing: RBC on Refining: "Tesoro's Margins Could Soar ...

The stock closed at $24.06.
Remember though, the company is not the stock. See links and chart below.
From Barron's Hot Research:

The refiner will benefit the most as margins rise in the region.

Tesoro (TSO: NYSE)
By RBC Capital Markets ($25.53, Aug. 31, 2011)
We expect a very high level of West Coast maintenance planned in October to increase refining margins in the region.

Tesoro (ticker: TSO) should benefit the most, and we have upgraded our rating on the stock from Sector Perform to Outperform. We are raising our price target from $28 to $30.

Refinery downtime on the West Coast in October 2011 is forecast to be at the highest monthly level since March 2007, and we expect lower supply to increase West Coast refining margins and Tesoro's share prices as has occurred during prior heavy-maintenance months.

We are increasing our earnings-per-share estimates for the third quarter from $1.15 to $1.45. We are also raising our EPS estimates for 2011 from $4.60 to $5.45, and for 2012 from $3.00 to $3.50....MORE

We've been pointing out the downstream businesses rather than the oil producers since about the first of the year:
February 18?
"Refining Profits Aren't Just a Pipe Dream" (FTO; VLO;TSO)

May 10?
President Obama and Crack (spreads) VLO; TSO; MRO; XOM

...Here's the EIA's list of the largest U.S. refineries, of the purer plays (fewer upstream operations) Tesoro has the best looking stock set up.
July 7?
"Barclays: Expect Surprises Among Refiners This Quarter" (MRO; TSO; VLO)

August 23?
Oh, It's Good to Be a Refiner (VLO; TSO; MPC; WNR; DK; ALJ; CVI)

The question is "How much has the market already priced in?". Looking at the chart

we see the August double bottom, usually a nice sign but in this case the stock has better than doubled in twelve months.

Being a big chicken I'd wait for a breakout above that July 26 closing high of $25.34 and maybe even some prints above the same day's intraday high of $25.79.

Email Marketing: Online Marketing at Its Best | Internet Marketing ...

31/08/11 9:40 AM

As the Internet continues to grow every year, people are learning of the potential benefits that they can gain from tapping into its phenomenal power. This is especially in terms of reaching new customers and clients for business through marketing on the Internet. There are various ways in which people can market their products or services on the Internet with some being proven to be more effective than others. Currently one of the most effective methods of online marketing is through the use of email. Email marketing is a form of direct marketing that uses email as a media for communicating commercial information either to current or to potential clients.

Email marketing can therefore be done as a means of building your business-customer relationship so as to encouraged customer loyalty or as a way of trying to attract new customers to purchase a good or a service immediately. Alternatively it can also be achieved by simply adding and advertisement on email messages that have been sent by other companies to their clients. What makes this method of marketing quite efficient is the fact that since the message gets to the clients inbox, the chances of them reading it and therefore taking action are very high compared to other untargeted forms of marketing.

Some of the advantages of email marketing over other forms of business marketing include:

* It is lower cost ? when you use email you can potentially cut down your marketing costs by up to 50% since you don?t have to spend on costs such as paper, printing and distribution.

* It has a global reach ? unlike other marketing campaigns for which a global marketing effort would simply not be viable, with email marketing all you need to do is click the send button and you could get your message to people on every corner of the world. You can therefore reach more people and get a better chance of improving your market share.

* It is highly personalized ? with email, you can personalize the message you send to every person you target. For example, you can start by greeting them by their name. This helps to create a bond with clients that is necessary if they trust you enough to do business with you.

* Results can easily be measured ? since email marketing is a form of online marketing, it is very easy to use certain tools to measure the click through rate and the conversion rate which can help you know whether or not your email marketing campaign is successful. You can therefore use different strategies and see which one works best in terms of boosting your returns.

Ex-NBA player Crittenton waives extradition (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton waived California extradition proceedings Wednesday and will be returned to Georgia in connection with his arrest in a murder case in Atlanta.

Crittenton appeared before Superior Court Judge Upinder Kalra and said he had voluntarily signed the waiver.

The Los Angeles County district attorney's office had charged Crittenton with being a fugitive from justice for the purpose of holding the extradition-waiver hearing.

Crittenton, who wore civilian clothes, appeared calm and answered, "Yes," in a soft voice when the judge asked if he had signed the waiver papers.

Defense attorney Brian Steel said outside court that Crittenton had earlier agreed to return to Atlanta voluntarily and had even bought a plane ticket, but law enforcement authorities decided to arrest him anyway.

Steel said he wants to get his client back to Atlanta to clear up the matter.

"Crittenton wants to do everything lawful because he did nothing," the attorney said.

Steel said his client is being falsely accused and the facts will come out at the preliminary hearing.

The judge said Crittenton will be returned to Atlanta between Sept. 15 and Sept. 30, but Steel said he would seek to have him returned sooner.

Asked why Crittenton had flown to California, Steel said that would come out at the preliminary hearing.

Crittenton was taken into custody Monday night at John Wayne Airport in Orange County.

Police in Atlanta had obtained a murder warrant for Crittenton in the Aug. 19 shooting of Jullian Jones, 23, a mother of four young children, as she was walking with two men.

Crittenton, 23, was wanted on a federal arrest warrant after the FBI learned that he traveled on a one-way ticket to Los Angeles, where he was known to have family and friends, several days after the shooting.

Jones was outside her house with 18-year-old Trontavious Stephens when a black Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid pulled up and gunfire erupted. Authorities have said they don't believe Jones was the intended target, but they haven't said whom they think the assailant was after.

Crittenton was with the Washington Wizards in December 2009 when he and teammate Gilbert Arenas had a dispute over a card game. Two days later, Arenas brought four guns to the locker room and set them in front of Crittenton's locker with a sign telling him to "PICK 1." Crittenton then took out his own gun.

Crittenton pleaded guilty in January 2010 to a misdemeanor gun charge and received a year of unsupervised probation. Arenas entered his guilty plea on Jan. 15, 2010. He served a short time in a halfway house.

Crittenton was the 19th overall pick of the 2007 NBA draft, selected by the Los Angeles Lakers. He played little with Los Angeles and was sent to Memphis in the Pau Gasol deal his rookie year. He was traded to Washington in December 2008. Crittenton is on the roster of the NBA developmental league's Dakota Wizards.

US appeals court considers wiretapping lawsuits (AP)

SEATTLE ? Lawyers for civil liberties groups asked a federal appeals court Wednesday to revive two groups of lawsuits claiming the government has monitored the communications of millions of Americans without warrants since 9/11.

The cases involve the federal government's widely expanded efforts to track down terrorists following the attack a decade ago ? efforts that included, at minimum, the interception of international communications that could include members of al-Qaida or other extremist groups.

The San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation, the American Civil Liberties Union and other critics allege that the surveillance was much broader than that, citing a declaration from a longtime AT&T worker that the company had allowed the National Security Agency to build a room in one of the company's buildings and route copies of customers' communications there.

The government has never confirmed or denied collecting communications from millions of U.S. citizens without warrants.

"We can't allow the government to stack the deck against ordinary Americans," EFF Legal Director Cindy Cohn said Wednesday. "We need to protect against officials who overstep limits on their power."

One set of lawsuits involves customers who sued telecommunications companies, including AT&T, alleging that the companies violated their privacy rights by turning their communications over to the NSA. The other involves lawsuits that some of those same plaintiffs brought against the government, saying the surveillance violated their constitutional rights.

The cases were consolidated before a now-retired federal judge in San Francisco, Vaughn Walker. In an unrelated case, Walker ruled that the government's warrantless wiretapping of the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation in Oregon was illegal and ordered the government to pay more than $2.5 million in lawyer fees and damages ? a ruling the Obama administration is appealing.

But the judge dismissed the cases brought by the telecom customers. He found that Congress acted legally in 2008 when it amended the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to allow the Justice Department to grant immunity to telecom companies that participated in the warrantless wiretapping program.

And in a separate ruling Walker decided the telecom customers did not have standing to sue the government directly because ? unlike the plaintiffs in the Al-Haramain case ? they had not suffered specific harm beyond those suffered by any other citizen.

In a decision last year, Walker described the latter case as "citizen suits seeking to ... punish and bring to heel high-level government officials for the allegedly illegal and unconstitutional warrantless electronic surveillance program or programs now widely, if incompletely, aired in the public forum."

But, he noted, "A citizen may not gain standing by claiming a right to have the government follow the law."
